The Smart Driver Mentor Program: Bridging the Training Gap
The Problem:
The trucking industry faces a growing complacency in driver training. Many schools prioritize profits over producing safe, skilled drivers, leading to a proliferation of “license mills.” Industry experts, instead of actively addressing these issues, often focus on trade shows and association boards, perpetuating a culture of apathy.
Government efforts to standardize courses provide a baseline, but they fall short of addressing the deeper training needs required for safe and insurable drivers. As a result, reputable carriers cannot hire graduates directly from these schools due to their lack of experience and insurability. New drivers often unknowingly accept positions with disreputable or underinsured companies, which can result in irreparable damage to their CVOR and careers.
The TTSAO Solution:
In Partnership with Cutler TCMS Inc and Driver Verified the TTSAO has adopted the use of The SmartDriver Mentor Program. The program is designed to address these critical gaps. Recognizing that not all students are suitable for mentorship, participating schools carefully identify both carriers and candidates with the potential to succeed in the program.
Once selected, these candidates are paired with a reputable preapproved carrier creating a structured mentorship experience. This program offers new drivers additional hands-on training and valuable experience, which helps reduce the cost of insuring them. For carriers, this ensures they can trust the level of training and preparedness these drivers bring to their organizations.
