Ontario is taking an important step forward in strengthening road safety and elevating commercial driver training standards. The Ministry of Transportation (MTO), the Ministry of Colleges and Universities (MCU), and key industry stakeholders—including the Truck Training Schools Association of Ontario (TTSAO)—are actively collaborating on the development of a provincial Truck Driver Instructor Certification framework.
This coordinated effort represents a major advancement in professionalizing the role of truck driver instructors, ensuring that those who train Ontario’s future drivers meet consistent, high-quality standards.
TTSAO’s Evolving Role in Instructor Certification
Earlier this year, TTSAO announced an initiative to adopt the Commercial Vehicle Training Association (CVTA) instructor standard from the United States. CVTA has long been a leader in advocating for strong, skills-based commercial driver training, and TTSAO deeply appreciates the organization’s willingness to support our efforts as we explored viable models for Ontario.
However, with the Province now leading a comprehensive, made-in-Ontario solution in partnership with industry, TTSAO is redirecting its focus and resources to support this new collaborative pathway.
TTSAO remains fully committed to playing a constructive role in shaping a framework that reflects Ontario’s unique regulatory environment, labour landscape, and training needs. We will continue to advocate for high standards, practical requirements, and measurable outcomes that benefit students, training providers, and the trucking sector as a whole.
Why Instructor Certification Matters
Truck Driver Instructor Certification is critical for creating safer roads and better-prepared commercial drivers. Consistency in instructor qualifications improves training quality across the province and helps:
- Ensure new drivers receive instruction based on proven best practices
- Strengthen compliance with Minimum Entry-Level Training (MELT) standards
- Reduce preventable collisions related to skill gaps
- Build public confidence in Ontario’s commercial training system
- Support the long-term professionalism of the trucking industry
A certified instructor workforce is a foundational part of ensuring that Ontario remains a leader in road safety while supporting carriers’ needs for competent, job-ready drivers.
Looking Ahead
TTSAO will continue to work closely with MTO, MCU, and industry partners as this certification program is developed and refined. We believe this collaborative approach will produce a framework that is robust, practical, and aligned with the realities of training providers across the province.
As more details become available, TTSAO will keep members informed and engaged. This is a pivotal moment for our industry, and together we can help build a safer, stronger, and more professional future for commercial driver training in Ontario.
