Who said you don’t need math to drive a truck?!
This week’s Tip is to make a simple math equation: One move = One signal.
This is an equation that anyone can understand. If you are going to make more than one lane change, or a lane change to set up a turn at an intersection, every single move requires a signal.
To take a line from the Karate Kid, and make a euphemism of it, “Signal On, Signal Off.” Don’t judge drivers based on their signaling; this is how collisions occur.
So, exactly where will this be needed? When on a highway and exiting, if not in the right-hand lane already, setting up for a left-hand turn in the city, making their way across lanes to get to a driveway for PU’s or deliveries, and any number of other occasions in multi-lane configurations.
Impress upon your students/drivers the need to communicate intentions properly. When driving the only real way to communicate is with the turn signal indicators. This is essential.
The classic verbiage to impress this point upon your students/drivers when on the road is to use the “C” word: “communicate.”
Prior to our time change this week, keep your math in mind and teach and practice, One move = One signal.
