New Ontario Driver’s Licence Requirements Take Effect May 11, 2026
Drivers applying for or renewing certain Ontario licences should be aware of new identification requirements that take effect May 11, 2026.
DriveTest has announced that applicants will be required to self-declare their residency and legal presence status when applying for an Ontario driver’s licence, exchanging a driver’s licence, completing a commercial class upgrade, or completing a commercial licence renewal.
Additional Requirements for Commercial Drivers
For commercial drivers, there are additional documentation requirements.
Applicants who are upgrading, exchanging or renewing a Class A, B, C, D, E or F licence will need to provide documents confirming:
- Ontario residency
- Legal presence in Canada
- Eligibility to work in Canada
Class D RV applicants are exempt from the requirement to provide work eligibility documents.
Make Sure You Bring the Required Documents
This is an important change for anyone planning a commercial licence upgrade or renewal.
DriveTest advises that your transaction cannot be completed if you do not bring the required documentation.
