So we press on, using our strength to direct government and business to call on safe, professional trainers to keep our Association providing the most competent and creative instructors to teach the necessary and safest techniques and skills for use on the road in future.
The training schools are experiencing the difficulty the rest of the industry is having, with fewer enrolments, less job openings and employment retention difficulties. At this time, good employers will seek upskilling and retraining for existing drivers while load shipments are down. This is the norm for our industry whenever there has been an economic slowdown in the past.
SERCO brought in the 3 new checkpoints that we have long asked the government to verify for licensing. These are steps taken from the stakeholder meetings we participate in at the MTO level. This goes along with the new 12-month G2-G initiative that was also one of the new regulations to come out of those meetings, which we have learned is now effective Jan. 1st, 2027, and carries just a 6-month Full G requirement. More than a little disappointing since a 12-month period was to ensure experience of driving through the winter.
We still are in the process of working through possibilities of what areas can change for the better in the creation of Entry Level Training with MTO in 2026. More to come on that at a later date, as we get closer to a final resolution.
The ‘Made in Canada’ Instructor Certification that we have pivoted toward will guarantee certainty that our program will mesh with MTO’s requirements. This allows for Master Trainers to provide in-house leadership for those instructors under their leadership.
