Training Tip #45

Minute by Minute Lessons for OTR

The new mandate to provide a minute-by-minute lesson plan for those periods of training in the truck present a whole new level of difficulty.

While specific training routes may be set up and plotted, an instructional commentary may accompany that route if EVERYTHING goes well. But what if anything changes on route.

There are oh-so-many things that may interfere with a smooth-running route without any unanticipated changes!
We have concentrated populations in the GTHA that train thousands of new students each year. With that population comes many unforeseen challenges. Things like congestion, construction, weather, emergency services, road closures, etc, that can alter the path.

So, the professional trainer must have a Plan B in mind for the entire route, to navigate on a truck route, and know what to look for and what to say to the student.

It really makes the administration responsible for 3 or more alternative routes for any one designated route. The most professional trainers will adapt to this, but it is beyond expectations to have your less professional maintain their composure and deliver meaningful lessons, in this case.

Perhaps MTO will reconsider this element of the ELT mandate, and realize it is not reasonable. And, perhaps, they will insist that technology is present to capture the route and training. We are on a wait-and-see basis right now.
