Let’s continue with some basic tips on how to improve a driver/student’s Defensive Driving.
Consider highway driving this week.
It is apparent that many drivers are now using the middle lane in a 3-lane highway, and some are even in the ‘fast’ lane, not the curb or right-hand lane.
Patience and discipline is required to hold your lane, and stay to the right on highways. This is most prevalent when travelling in the USA. Even in Ontario it is against the law to travel in the ‘fast’ lane on most major highways. Yet there are trucks doing this, even when carrying TDG loads!
A golden saying from a former instructor is one to remember, “Every unnecessary lane change you make, takes you one step closer to a collision.”
When you look at the OPP collision records from 2022, there were over 10,000 truck incidents reported, and many of those were side impacts. And this number is steadily increasing. These occur on lane changes.
So use patience and caution whenever you make a lane change. Do not rush, do not stay in a lane other than the right hand lane, and plan your trips to give you time to get to your destination without rushing and making unsafe lane changes!
